(5 Aug 2016) The Olympic torch reached Maua Square in downtown Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night where a small, symbolic cauldron was lit on stage.
Locals celebrated as local model and actress Adriana Lima lowered her torch towards the cauldron.
Later, the torch headed to Copacabana where a small group of people protested against Brazil’s interim president, Michel Temer.
Bar owner and Chapeu Mangueira shantytown resident David Vieira Bispo was among those carrying the torch.
He criticised last minute changes in the route of the torch, that did not go into the shantytown.
The torch will visit the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer on Friday morning, before touring the city and reaching Maracana stadium for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday night.
